The first edition of the SFA Operators course 2025 was held from the 24th to the 28th of February, hosted at the Italian Army’s “Granatieri di Sardegna” Brigade.
The aim of the course was to improve the competency and effectiveness of SFA field operators involved in current and future operations and security related capacity-building initiatives.
Following the Director’s introduction, the course commenced with an opening speech by the Commander of the “Granatieri di Sardegna” Brigade, who welcomed all participants and expressed his deep appreciation for this significant training activity.
At the onset of the course, participants took part in a team building session designed to enhance cooperation and knowledge, thereby facilitating syndicates work and role-playing exercises, with a particular focus on communication insights. Going into further detail, they engaged in role-playing scenarios that provided a deeper understanding of cultural respect, while acting as advisors and learning how to interact with local counterparts through interpreters.
Within the practical lessons, attendees were divided into syndicate groups participating in scenario-based training that allowed them to apply their skills in realistic environments. They were tasked to develop a “conflict map” with the intent of drawing links between local forces, institutions, capability efficiency, and relevant stakeholders.
This experiential learning approach was instrumental for enhancing their decision-making abilities in high-pressure circumstances.
Among the theoretical activities, the integration of a gender perspective within the SFA activities generated significant interest. Gender analysis plays in fact a crucial role in planning advisory sessions, as it helps ensure that diverse perspectives are considered and addressed.
The course was further enriched by two case studies, the first one focused on the European Union Training Mission in Mali, providing an analysis of the mission and a broader overview of Africa. The second one was held by Major General Piasente, who, as former Chief of Staff of NATO Mission IRAQ contingent, examined the current situation and future challenges of NMI.
The SFA Operators Course provides a invaluable opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills in a supportive environment through practical exercises and interactive lessons on SFA-related topics.
